Book 2008                                                   “IN GOD WE TRUST”                                      November

THANKSGIVING:  I realize this is a busy time of the year as we prepare for the Holiday Season. Many of you will be welcoming your family home for a Thanksgiving dinner or maybe going to meet with family or friends.  Hopefully you will have the time to attend a Thanksgiving Mass to give thanks to Christ the King for the many blessing received this past year.  Whatever you do, know that Lady Jan and I extend our best wishes to you and your families for a Very Happy Thanksgiving.

MONTHLY NEWSLETTERS:  Many of the Assemblies in the Minnesota District communicate with their membership through the use of a newsletter.  Assemblies that share their newsletter with me please know that it is very much appreciated. Most of the newsletters I receive are through the internet.  Many of the assemblies are going to the internet as a means of communication because it is fast and very cost effective.  Most use the email process with their newsletter as I do with this “brief”.  The Bishop Edward A. Fitzgerald Assembly of Rochester has established a web site.  FN Mark Zangs has given his permission to share it with you.  It is   I think they have done an excellent job in putting this means of communication together.  Maybe it will give your assembly some ideas to economically communicate with your membership.  With postage at 42 cents its $42 per hundred mailings not including printing costs.  Do the math for your assembly and give it some thought for communicating with members that have email access.

SPRING EXEMPLIFICATION – HOSPITALITY ROOMS:  The 2009 Spring Exemplification is April 18th at The Northland Inn in Brooklyn Park.  All of the rooms in the hotel are suites.  They are very spacious and nice. Daily room rates are as follows:  VIP/Hospitality Suite $199 plus tax; Single Executive Suite $159 plus tax; Single/Double Standard Suite $99 plus tax. I bring this information to your attention because room reservations are being made at this time and you may wish to reserve a room for hospitality or membership purposes. If your assembly is planning a hospitality room you should know the hotel does not permit the use of electrical appliances in the guest rooms.  This is to comply with a City of Brooklyn Park Fire Ordinance. Therefore no hot plates, crock pots, microwaves, toasters etc. are permitted in the guest rooms.  For those making a room reservation, please call 763-536-8300 and ask for “reservations”. They should let the agent know they are with the Knights of Columbus.

SPRING EXEMPLIFICATION REGISTRATION PACKETS will be mailed to each Faithful Navigator and Faithful Comptroller in early January.  It is not too early to think about the exemplification.  Costs are similar to last spring in Rochester.  There will be a Friday evening dinner, a Saturday breakfast buffet, a ladies “Joy of Giving luncheon” and the Saturday evening “Welcome & Hall of Fame banquet”.  As the leaders of your assembly you will want to attend the exemplification and encourage your membership to join you welcoming the candidates into the Fourth Degree.  Hopefully some of the candidates are from your assembly,

THE 2008 EDITION OF THE LAWS AND RULES Governing the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus should now be in every assembly in the District.  The red covered manual was included in the packets to the FN and I believe to the FC.  Please take the time to reference it as there are some changes and I will reference some of them in my monthly newsletter. For example on pages 12 & 13, Article VII, Section 22, order of business for an assembly meeting:  you will note in the agenda at # 15 “Report of the Third Degree”.  Included in this report is council activity within your assembly district.  All of you know the councils represented within you assembly and a liaison representative from the assembly should be assigned to each council. This SK should be called on to report council/ assembly activities at the respective meetings. Sir Knights should be encouraged and maybe even assigned to attend Council social and fund raising functions. This will demonstrate assembly interest in council activities and afford Sir Knights an excellent opportunity for Fourth Degree membership recruitment.

2009 FALL EXEMPLIFICATION:  Thus far I have not been approached by an assembly that is interested in hosting the Fall Exemplification.  There are many advantages to hosting an exemplification. It provides a great opportunity to increase the assembly membership.  St. Cloud, Crookston, Rochester and Willmar assemblies will attest to this.  It also enhances the current membership as it gives them an opportunity to work together and enhance new and old friendships.  Usually there is also some financial benefit in the sharing of revenue.  The District Master has established an exemplification outline that has been helpful to exemplification chairmen and committee people. Following the outline makes the process quite easy. Please discuss this opportunity within your assembly and contact me if you have an interest.

RENEWAL OF OBLIGATIONS:  I have received requests from 19 assemblies to participate in their Renewal of Obligations ceremonial meeting. These assemblies are noted on the District Master’s calendar below.  If your assembly is not listed and you are holding a renewal of obligations ceremony please contact me to secure a date.  If the ceremony is to be conducted by someone other than the District Master I need his name, rank and date of the ceremonial meeting.
